A Message from the Medical Director

The Prescribers’ Clinical Support System for Opioid Therapies is a national training and mentoring program sponsored by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (CSAT/SAMHSA). This program will offer online and webinar –based training in the safe and effective treatment of those receiving opioid medications, either for the treatment of pain or for the treatment of opioid dependence. In addition, this program offers a Peer Support Program in which prescribers can get questions about use of opioid medications answered by experts in the field.

Expert presenters on topics of interest in safe and effective opioid use in clinical practice and the recognition and treatment of addiction will be available to answer questions through the project List-serve. Exciting new modalities to assist clinicians using opioid therapies are in development and include a cell phone application that will include tools that will be useful in clinical practice and the development of virtual patients who clinicians can interact with online.

We hope you will explore this website and our linked website for the Physicians’ Clinical Support System-Buprenorphine which contains educational information about office-based treatment of opioid dependence and is available by a link on this homepage. This project is one means by which we can start to address the epidemic of adverse events and deaths related to opioid medication misuse and abuse. We hope you will find this program of use in your clinical practice.
